National Night Out a Soggy Success
You may have seen the big tent on the front lawn on Parkside near Florence, an unforurnate necessity to keep National Night Out revellers dry. But despite the several bouts of rain, thunder, and lightning, a good time was had by the dozens of Parksiders, and dozens of public servants who attended National Night Out Festivities along Parkside Avenue on Tuesday, August 5.
Residents were able to shake hands with, share a pop with, and thank many of the first responders responsible for keeping our neighborhood safe. Among those celebrating the night with us were some of the crew from Engine 38 (Colvin and Linden), D-District Police Chief Anthony Barba. Longtime friend of Parkside, Vanessa Curry, was again escorted to several Night Out gatherings by the Transit Police.
State Senator Antoine Thompson and Delaware District Common Council Member Michael LoCurto also dodged rain drops to spend some time with constituents. Representatives of Congressman Brian Higgins, Mayor Byron Brown, as well as County Clerk Kathy Hochul were partying under the tent with Parkside enjoying good time.
The event, put on for the whole community by the Parkside (between Florence and W. Oakwood) Block Club, was made possibile in part, by grant from the Buffalo and Erie County Board of Block Clubs, and Senator Thompson.

Rev. David Selzer Leaving Good Shepherd
The long time Rector at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church is leaving Buffalo for The Diocese of Ottawa. While David is going where his spiritual and community leadership skills are greatly needed, his departure will certainly be a loss for this community, which he's called home for quite some time now. Please join us in wishing good travels to David; his wife, Ann Miller; and their two daughters, who have been such a part of the fabric of the Parkside Community.

From Good Shepherd's e-Voice Newsletter: Immigration Canada has grudgingly cooperated (at least a one-year work permit), and plans are being made for the transition at the end of the summer.... The Vestry is now working on the details of the transition... . Sunday 24 August at 5:00 pm, there will be a celebration of ministries. In the meantime, believe that Good Shepherd will continue to be a light for the Parkside neighborhood and Buffalo, a parish with fabulous leadership, and a welcoming presence for all.

Coming this Fall: The Parkside Calendar
Chock full of historic photos, The 2009 Parkside Calendar renews a a very popular past Parkside tradition. The 2009 calendar picks through the archives to show a few buildings that are no longer there... what some blocks looked like before the present houses were built... and how we've improved certain other areas. Information on how to get copy of the calendar will be forthcoming, right in this very spot, very soon.
And believe it or not, we're already looking for photos for next year's calendar. Photos don't have to be decades old, they just have to show what it's been like to live in Parkside through the years.

Parkside is listed on the National Register Historic Places

Architectural & Historical Walking Tour of Parkside
The Parkside Community Association and Buffalo Tours presents an approximately 2 hour guided walking tour of the historic Parkside neighborhood on Saturday, August 9, beginning at 10 am, rain or shine. Learn about the architecture, lifestyle, and history of this fascinating area. The walk is easy, the pace leisurely. Many of the historic structures and landmarks in the neighborhood are highlighted, including the Church of the Good Shepherd and the Pierce Arrow Building. Walk past beautifully manicured gardens and learn to appreciate the different architecture. As breathtaking as North Buffalo is, few visitors ever get a chance to experience the real beauty and history of its neighborhoods.

This walking tour begins at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 96 Jewett Parkway. Admission to the tour is $10. Payment can be made by cash or check the morning of the tour. Walking tour admissions support the continuing work of the Parkside Community Association and Buffalo Tours.
