Two suspects sought for multiple Parkside burgleries

On Sunday August 28th two African American men driving a silver SUV with Maine license plates were seen breaking into a home on West Oakwood at 11:45, in the middle of the day.  They smashed the glass on the front door, and made off with electronic equipment and multiple musical instruments.  The descriptions of these two as given by a vigilant Parkside resident match the description of the gentleman that were seen attempting to rob a rental unit on Parkside Avenue on a Thursday morning, August 18th at 10:00 am.

Parkside Security Patrols

The PCA is planning to introduce a pilot program in which we will independently contract with a private security firm to offer additional patrols of the Parkside community at random times each week.  We will hire a marked patrol car to cruise the neighborhood, typically at night between 9 pm to 3 am to keep an eye out for suspicious activity.  If you witness anything or suspect anything, It's important that you first contact 911.  You will soon have the additional option of contacting the PCA patrol car as well, which will be able to respond much more quickly.

Councilman Michael LoCurto has generously offered matching funds to support this pilot program however we will be dependent primarily on member donations.

Parkside Security Patrols

During the Spring and Summer of 2011, the Parkside neighborhood witnessed a noticeable increase in porch larcenies and car break ins.  While in themselves they were not unexpected, and did not involve either actual or threats of violence, we quickly understood that the police would often taken half an hour or longer to respond to multiple 911 calls.  Given the number of patrol cars responsible for all of Delaware District, and the number of higher priority incidents in other neighborhoods, the police were simply unable to respond any quicker.  The situation became pronounced enough that we began to worry about well intentioned residents getting frustrated enough to take matters into their own hands, and possibly ending in violence.

The PCA then, with the support of Councilman LoCurto, initiated a temporary Private Security Patrol program.  We contracted with Buffalo Protection and Investigation to run a patrol car dedicated to just the Parkside neighborhood on weekend nights.  Along with the generous support of our members, we were able to run this program for 5 consecutive weeks.

This fall we have received reports of break-ins or attempted break-ins of homes during weekday working hours.  We have argued that the neighborhood should received increase police presence during working hours as this largely residential neighborhood empties out during the day, when other neighborhoods presumably are not seeing much activity.  The Police responded by increasing day time patrols, but efforts are ongoing as reports of incidents continue coming in.  The Security Patrol program was not designed to cover the neighborhood for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, and simply is not funded for that amount of coverage.  Furthermore it was not intended to replace the role of the police, but merely to address weaknesses in the system.

Going forward, the PCA will reserve funds for patrols to be scheduled around discreet events or holidays, as well as for weather related emergencies or black outs.  We must stress that if you witness a crime, or believe a crime is being committed, ALWAYS CALL 911 FIRST.  Likewise, let us know if you or somebody you know has been a victim of a crime so we can notify your neighbors and follow up with the police.  To sign up for our weekly crime alerts, please submit your e-mail address on our home page.  Lastly, if you are interested in supporting this program you may do so below, or by submitting a check to

Prevent Porch Burglaries

The Parkside Community Association Crime & Safety Committee wants to remind residents that this is the season for porch burglaries. The photo is taken from a security video made by a Parkside neighbor showing a couple of individuals carrying off planters and a porch blind. A bright light on your porch can help prevent porch burglaries. There are also ways to secure hanging planters and porch furniture. Please call 911 if you see someone suspicious.

Reminder from the Crime & Safety Committee

The PCA Crime & Safety Committee had their monthly meeting recently and would like to remind everyone that during the holiday season there is often a rise in larcenies and robberies. Many car break-in occur at this time and is important for everyone to keep their vehicle locked and to remove all visible items such as bags, loose change, GPS devices including the suction cup attachments..., etc.
