Information from the Community

Reminder from the Buffalo Property Tax Coalition:
Tuesday, October 15, 11am in Room 1417 of City Hall will be the Common Council Caucus meeting. Here, the Council will be discussing how it will vote on the property tax exemption for seniors in the Fruit Belt. The City is trying to say that this policy is the solution to displacement from the reassessment. The Coalition’s position is that this is NOT the solution. This legislation only applies to 7 census tracts in the City, requires 25 years of continuous ownership, is for seniors only, and has household income limit of $30k. We’ve been arguing that this legislation was meant to protect only the Fruit Belt (and very few Fruit Belt residents at that)—not the rest of the City. If the Council votes to approve this, homeowners in the following areas will not be protected: West Side, Oxford Ave area, North Buffalo, Old First Ward, Hamlin Park, Riverside, and many more (the vast majority of the City).
What you can do:
- Publicize the meeting. We need lots of people there!
- Call your councilmemberand tell them what you think of the proposed exemption
- Go to the meetingon Tuesday and tell them how the assessment will impact you and what you think of the proposed exemption. The Buffalo Property Tax Coalition’s perspective is that the Council should not pass this legislation until it:
- Is city-wide
- has shorter length of homeownership req.
- has no age restriction, is income-based only
We know that daytime meetings are not ideal, but please go to the meeting if you are able, and recruit your neighbors to attend too! This may be our last chance to influence the Council to create a comprehensive exemption that will protect vulnerable homeowners across the City.
