    19th Annual Tour of Homes

It's time to put your house on the Parkside Tour of Homes!
    Sunday, May 21, 2017

Every year the Parkside Tour of Homes invites people from the city, suburbs, and even Toronto and Rochester to visit our neighborhood. It's a chance for us to show off a little, share our unique slice of Buffalo, and raise money for PCA efforts throughout the year.

The PCA Tour of Homes Committee is hard at work planning our event for 2017, and we still have room on our roster for a few more homes - including yours, hopefully!

We'd be happy to answer any questions or concerns you have, and even put you in touch with homeowners in the neighborhood who have had their homes on the tour in the past. We're looking for a few more homes by the end of February, so if you're thinking about it, please get in touch at pcadirector@gmail.com or call 716-838-1240.

     Winter Weather Driving Tips

Whether you walk, bike, drive, or use transit, navigating winter weather conditions requires some preparation and caution. The PCA assembled some tips in infographic form to share with you. These are not conclusive, so as always, use your best judgement before travel. This week we feature Winter Driving:

Reduce Speed: Keep speed slow to avoid slipping and sliding.

Allow Longer Stopping Distances: It takes extra time to slow down so leave space between you and the car in front of you.

Turn Off Cruise Control: Take control of your own acceleration.

Take it Slow: Steer, brake and accelerate slowly so you don't lose controlof the car.

Beware of Black Ice: Slow down before intersections, off-ramps, bridges or shady spots where black ice forms.

Enter Traffic Cautiously: Don't take chances, don't cut in front.

    PCA Traffic Committee Update

New York State Department of Transportation
    Scajaquada Corridor Public Comment Opportunity

Wednesday January 25, the New York State Dept. of Transportation presented the Draft Environmental Impact Study (DEIS) for the Scajaquada Corridor project. Comments will be accepted until February 8, 2017, after which time the NYSDOT will either amend the DESI or proceed into design and construction to be started winter of 2017.

The PCA and our partners along the corridor, including the Scajaquada Corridor Coalition (SCC) have conveyed our concerns to the NYSDOT about the existing plan. These issues include the exclusion of the 198 from Parkside Avenue to the 33 from the study, no planned changes to the 198 east of Parkside Avenue, maintaining a 9-line intersection at Parkside Avenue, oversized intersections throughout the project, exclusion of bike lanes, inclusion of a median (similar to Main Street medians),and project segmentation along the east and western ends of the Scajaquada. If you would like more detail on these issues, please click HERE.

This is your last opportunity to have your voice heard, please send your comments to the NYSDOT and our elected officials. Contact information can be found via this link. There is also a petition you can sign through this link.

    Assisting Our Seniors

The PCA Aging in Place program has been providing transportation for the North Buffalo area for nearly six years, is in their second year of the Snow Angels initiative, and has been accumulating resources and implementing ways to help the seniors of our community to live in their homes by making Parkside an accessible neighborhood. All of these efforts have been forged by long time resident, and board member Susan Udin.

University at Buffalo visited with the PCA recently and you can read all about Udin and the efforts of the Aging in Place program here.

    Other Ways to Serve Seniors

People Inc.’s Senior Companion Program assists seniors who have difficulty with daily living tasks so that they can retain their dignity and independence. Among other activities, the Senior Companion may assist with tasks, such as grocery shopping and errands; providing friendship and companionship; alerting doctors and family members to potential problems and providing respite for caregivers.

The program is currently recruiting for additional volunteers. To learn more about this gratifying opportunity, view a recent news segment or call 716.768.2381. For more information, visit their website HERE or download their PDF.

Meals on Wheels for Western New York (MOWWNY) has been focused on the most basic, most critical of home needs of home-bound seniors . Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers are committed to enriching lives and promoting independent healthy living by offering nutritious food and a friendly visit. Their vision is to ensure that every member of our community will receive a meal that meets their nutritional needs.

MOWWNY wants to recruit 475 new volunteers this year. Help them reach their goal!

AniMeals - An ancillary program of MOWWNY is available to all home-delivered clients with pets. Free pet food is delivered once a month through the AniMeals program. This helps ensure that clients’ furry friends are cared for and that clients can enjoy the benefits of a pet companion. If interested, ask about AniMeals during enrollment.
