Volunteers Need for PCA Aging in Place Programs

The PCA keeps a resource page on our website for our senior residents. Information available includes community resources and social services, as well as information on two Parkside initiatives, Snow Angels and Door-to-Door Transportation.

Our Door-to-Door Transportation program is in high need of volunteers to help with driving. If you could give a couple hours of your time once a month, please reach out, PCAdirector@gmail.com or 716-838-1240. We need you please!

    Pets and Seniors

Are you wondering how you are going to care for your pet as you age in place? Are you wondering if you should adopt a pet as you age in place? This guide will help you decide on the best choice for you. Studies have shown that owning a pet can be physically and mentally beneficial for people of all ages. In the case of senior citizens, “just 15 minutes bonding with an animal sets off a chemical chain reaction in the brain, lowering levels of the fight-or-flight hormone, cortisol, and increasing production of the feel-good hormone serotonin. The result: heart rate, blood pressure and stress levels immediately drop. Over the long term, pet and human interactions can lower cholesterol levels, fight depression and may even help protect against heart disease and stroke” (Byrne, 2015).

    Parkside Wines on Wednesday

    Wednesdays | 7PM
    Locations vary within Parkside

This is the Thirteenth year for this unique adult, neighborhood event. It's a great way to meet your Parkside neighbors! It could be in the backyard, front-yard, porch, or indoors. The host provides snacks, and the guests bring a bottle of wine! That's it! For more information and a schedule click here.

    Trees of Parkside

We lost of a number of our trees after last summer’s drought and we need your help in reporting this to the City Forester so that we can have them removed and/or replaced. Please call 311 or report on their website.

If you could notify the PCA that you have reported a tree, that would allow us to help follow up on the progress of the request. Email your tracking number and any additional details to Gardens@parksidebuffalo.org.

    Proper Mulching of Trees

For the health of your trees, keep mulch from touching the bark of the tree. Mulching is helpful for many reasons, but mulch around the base of the tree that touches the bark, can lead to diseases and attract pests and simply deflect water from the tree's roots.

    Parkside Pennants!

Want to show off your Parkside Pride? We know, of course you do! The PCA has a wide variety of logo apparel, household items, and cards in our online store. Most recently we worked with Oxford Pennant, a local merchant, to produce Parkside Pennants!

Pennants are now available for sale through our website, and we can provide free Parkside neighborhood delivery, or you may pick up in our office, 2318 Main Street.

Parkside Architecture & Historic Database Project

This past spring the PCA began an exciting new project, the mission of which is to collect architectural and historical information about the built environment in the Parkside neighborhood of Buffalo. This will be helpful for our neighborhood historians and for our walking tours, and perhaps the Tour of Homes, and for the Garden and Architecture Tour.

The first step is data collection. If you have researched your home, have stories about previous owners or the history that took place in your house, or know about the architect or something about the changes made to your home over time, that is something we would love to know too.

We would love to welcome neighborhood volunteers—especially those of you who have a particular interest in history and architecture, of course, but also if you just want to learn more and contribute.

If you want to participate in this project, please contact the PCA, 716-838-1240 or PCAdirector@gmail.com, and we can work together.

    Fun Facts!

Popsicles, a popular summer treat, was accidentally invented by an 11-year-old boy in San Francisco in 1905. He left a glass of soda sitting outside and by the next morning the soda had frozen. He began selling them at an amusement park in New Jersey. In the U.S., cherry is the number 1 flavor.
